If stress or fatigue are clouding your cognitive ability, tyrosine may be the supplement to clear and boost your mind. But how does tyrosine work? Here, we look at what tyrosine can do for you, and the best tyrosine supplements to consider.
We’ve all struggled for optimal cognitive function – or even just enough to get through the day! Life can take a lot out of us, demand a lot in return, and give little respite. A little ace in your hand can go a long, long way. Something that really should help to supercharge your cognitive wellbeing.
Tyrosine is one of the premium cognitive-enhancing ingredients out there, able to help you better meet the challenges of daily life for the sake of a small change to your supplement routine. Its star ability is to enhance brain health and performance.
And, happily, I was recently given the opportunity to review some of the best tyrosine supplements on the market.
Quick Verdict
I would go with Momentous Tyrosine. We have a truly top-quality supplement here, able to fully harness the power of tyrosine to support cognitive function, stress reduction, and mood regulation.
With premium ingredients and a suitable dosage, they are easy to take and come in a convenient bottle. Perfect for those on the go, they provide a reliable and effective way to boost cognitive performance and promote mental wellbeing. For anyone looking to enhance their cognitive abilities and optimize their health, Momentous Tyrosine capsules are a great choice.
Our top tyrosine supplements
Let’s get straight into the very best tyrosine supplements available to us today, and what makes them so good at delivering this very helpful amino acid.
Momentous Tyrosine
Momentous Tyrosine capsules have to be my preferred of all the offerings I’ve looked at. With 60 servings of 500 mg of L-tyrosine, it’s generous, workable, and perfect as a way to find benefits for mental focus, alertness, and stress response.
Momentous Tyrosine is manufactured by Momentous, one of my favorite supplement companies and, to me, a bit of a byword for quality. As a company, they have made a good name for themselves specializing in producing best-in-class human performance products.
Momentous aims to provide supplements and nutrition designed for everyday performance, helping individuals achieve their goals. Their L-Tyrosine supplement is meticulously formulated using high-quality plant-based sources, ensuring purity, potency, and adherence to the highest standards. Momentous follows expert verified protocols to integrate L-Tyrosine into their product for optimal effectiveness.
Of course, Momentous Tyrosine capsules’ effective cognitive support comes through L-tyrosine, the key highlight in its formula. The potential benefits include enhanced mental focus and alertness, making it a valuable addition in anybody’s supplement routine when in need of a good pick-me-up.
I quite like the fact that they’ve gone for 60 servings per pack. The fact that you get a couple of months’ supply is a really helpful advantage. You get great value for your money, and you’ll not need to bother reordering all the time. It’s a nice little perk.
It’s also incredibly reasonably priced, generally giving you change from twenty dollars.
Of course, there is more to like, otherwise you could find any cheap knock-off product, buy it in bulk, take it daily and never worry. But I’ve rarely felt the kinds of benefits I felt with Momentous Tyrosine capsules.
Individual results will always vary with this kind of supplement, but honestly, I felt terrific with them. The quality sort of speaks for itself – enhanced focus, energy, and an overall sense of wellbeing that is genuinely hard to beat.
However, it is important to mention that some people may experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort when taking these capsules. This is a common side effect that can occur with certain amino acid supplements. It’s the only real downside I can think of here.
Nutricost L-Tyrosine
For me, Nutricost’s L-Tyrosine supplement really comes into its own for those with any specific dietary requirements.
With a powerful formula, this supplement offers remarkable benefits for cognitive function and overall wellbeing, but it is also non-GMO and gluten-free. Manufactured in a GMP compliant, FDA registered facility, it meets high-quality and safety standards, providing confidence in its efficacy.
Nutricost are a well-known brand that specialize in manufacturing high-quality nutritional supplements. They are dedicated to providing customers with premium products backed by science and research.
Nutricost’s supplements are carefully made using top-grade ingredients sourced from trusted suppliers. With a focus on quality and purity, Nutricost follows strict manufacturing processes and operates in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certified facilities. They offer a wide range of supplements, many of which I’ve used in my own personal regimen over the years, including vitamins, minerals, sports nutrition, herbs, and more.
Nutricost pride themselves on transparency, ensuring that each product’s label accurately represents the contents inside. They strive to support their customers’ health and wellness goals with reliable and affordable supplements.
Every box is ticked. Every t crossed and i dotted.
And it’s cheap, and at great value at 180 capsules per pot. If you want the benefits at around a 10-20% discount on what you’d pay for other options, it’s the one for you – though, admittedly, it doesn’t seem to give quite the same degree of benefit as some of its more expensive cousins.
And, with all this said, you also get an ideal dosage of 500mg of L-Tyrosine per capsule. This means almost perfect support for memory, focus, and mood regulation.
Do note, however, that some of the reported side effects can be a little off-putting – you may experience mild side effects like headaches or nausea. These effects are usually temporary and can be mitigated by taking the supplement with food or adjusting the dosage.
But still, they are there. If you have medical conditions or take specific medications, consult a healthcare professional before including this supplement in your routine.
NOW L-Tyrosine
NOW L-Tyrosine kicks pretty hard. You get that all-important 500 mg dose of L-tyrosine with each serving. However, NOW Supplements’ L-Tyrosine is specially formulated with pharmaceutical-grade L-Tyrosine, ensuring its quality and efficacy in promoting optimized wellbeing.
It also goes hard on those with dietary requirements, more so even than Nutricost’s offering – it is non-GMO, nut-free, dairy-free, and soy-free, making it accessible to a wide range of users. If you have specific dietary needs or preferences, this supplement provides a convenient and safe option for incorporating L-Tyrosine into your routine.
NOW Foods are a great, well-established brand in the nutritional supplement industry. They have been in operation for over half a century (which is a bonkers amount of time in the modern supplement market, where newcomers seem to pop up every other day) and are known for their commitment to quality and purity of their products.
NOW L-Tyrosine is made using the highest-quality ingredients and follows strict manufacturing processes to ensure potency and effectiveness. NOW Foods also prioritizes customer satisfaction and safety by adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and performing thorough quality checks on their products.
I have always found that it works well, too. When incorporating it into my daily routine, I have often noticed some decent improvements in mental alertness and focus.
However, the capsules are pretty unpleasant to take. It’s not the worst thing ever – they are still fine to live with; but they are a little large to swallow comfortably.
If this is a concern, alternative options such as breaking open the capsule and mixing the contents with food or liquid might be worth looking into – or going with a separate product.
The same side effects also apply – mild nausea, potential headaches. They are, as ever, quite lightweight and very temporary, but do keep them in mind and plan accordingly.
Horbäach L-Tyrosine
I had to include this, even if I wouldn’t particularly recommend it to anybody – the Horbäach L-Tyrosine supplement kicks harder than most, to an unnecessary (and potentially unpleasant) degree. It gives you 1,000 mg of L-Tyrosine per capsule. Perfect for those who like to go hard with this kind of thing.
However, higher doses come with a risk. Excessive L-Tyrosine intake can potentially lead to the same side effects associated with lower doses, just that much worse, and that much more likely to come about. Some possible side effects of taking too much L-Tyrosine include headaches, nausea, heartburn, fatigue, and changes in blood pressure.
These are generally only related to excess intake, so higher doses will mean greater risks without much by way of proven reward.
This said, Horbäach as a brand are known for their commitment to quality, specializing in manufacturing high-quality dietary supplements and wellness products. They offer a wide range of nutritional supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts, and so on, with an honest commitment to quality, using premium ingredients sourced from trusted suppliers. They follow strict manufacturing practices and ensure their products are tested for potency, purity, and safety.
This gives you the confidence that you are getting a reliable and high-quality product. It’s just far too strong! Alright for some, maybe. For most… not so much.
I always err on the side of caution when it comes to supplements, preferring a sensible dosage, but I simply had to include it in this list to give you a look at the more extreme end of the market.
Nature’s Craft Free Form L-Tyrosine
Now we come back down to Earth, finishing with Nature’s Craft Free Form L-Tyrosine 500mg capsules.
I like Nature’s Craft. They are a fantastic brand who offer a wide range of high-quality health and wellness products. With a mission to provide natural and effective supplements, Nature’s Craft have dedicated themselves to promoting overall wellbeing.
Their products are carefully formulated using scientifically-backed ingredients to ensure maximum potency and effectiveness. Nature’s Craft supplements undergo rigorous testing and are produced in FDA registered facilities, adhering to strict quality and safety standards.
Whether you are looking for supplements to support cognitive function, joint health, or weight management, Nature’s Craft offer a reliable and trusted solution to meet your health needs. But back to their L-Tyrosine…
Their L-Tyrosine capsules do pretty much everything you would expect of a high-quality, well-dosed L-Tyrosine product, with all the benefits and potential side effects ingrained. They aren’t market leaders, but they’re still very, very good.
Verdict
Tyrosine supplementation has shown significant potential in supporting cognitive function, stress reduction, and mood regulation. As a precursor for neurotransmitter synthesis, its positive effects on mental health and wellbeing are well-documented and really quite promising.
Whether through supplementation or dietary changes, it is important to prioritize brain health and mental wellbeing to optimize overall health and quality of life. And if you want to go down the supplementation route, you are spoilt for choice.
There are some really good supplements out there. With one exception (I don’t feel Horbäach’s dosing is suitable at 1,000 mg), everything on this list should be good for any users – though do make sure to check in with your healthcare provider before making any drastic changes to your supplement regime.
I have to come up with a winner, however. For me, this has to be Momentous, a company I’ve always admired. Momentous Tyrosine capsules are a high-quality supplement that provides an effective dosage of tyrosine to support cognitive function, stress reduction, and mood regulation.
Momentous make it from high-end ingredients, and the end result is free from common allergens. It’s all very easy to take and is packaged in a convenient bottle, in a generous quantity, making it ideal for those who want to optimize their brain health and mental wellbeing on the go.
There isn’t much in it between Momentous and most other items on this list. But if pushed (and I’m being pushed – my editor always asks for a top pick!), then it’s what I would pick. It’s the one I would buy with my own money if I was looking for a long-term tyrosine source.
What is tyrosine?
It’s likely you’ve heard a little about the benefits of tyrosine, which has led you to your search for the best tyrosine supplements. But how much do you know about how it works? I’ve outlined the most standout tyrosine supplements already – now here’s why they could be a great addition to your supplement routine.
Tyrosine is an amino acid – one of the building blocks of protein – that is found naturally in certain foods. It is considered a non-essential amino acid, meaning that it can be synthesized by the body and does not necessarily need to be obtained through dietary sources – it is produced in small quantities within the body.
Tyrosine’s structure is unique as it contains a phenol functional group. This gives it some distinct properties and allows it to participate in various biochemical reactions.
One of tyrosine’s key roles is its involvement in neurotransmitter production. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that facilitate communication between nerve cells in the brain. Specifically, tyrosine is a precursor for the synthesis of catecholamines, a collective term for the chemicals dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine.
Catecholamines play crucial roles in regulating mood, motivation, and cognitive function. They are involved in the body’s stress responses and are needed for the central nervous system’s (CNS) healthy, normal functioning.
Because of all of this, adequate tyrosine levels are important for maintaining optimal brain health and overall mental wellbeing.
Tyrosine also serves as a precursor for the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate your metabolism, growth, and development. Additionally, it is involved in the synthesis of melanin, the pigment responsible for hair, skin, and eye color. This makes tyrosine crucial for maintaining healthy hair, skin, and vision.
Tyrosine has been studied for its potential to benefit cognitive function, and for its ability to help reduce stress and increase alertness and focus. Studies suggest that tyrosine supplementation may enhance cognitive performance under stressful conditions – for instance, during prolonged periods of sleep deprivation or exposure to cold temperatures, or throughout intense, busy periods in your life.
However, it is important to note that excessive intake of tyrosine or supplementation without medical supervision may have some unpleasant side effects on your health.
Research on Tyrosine

We already have a fair amount of studies that support claims that tyrosine can boost our brain’s ability in stressful or fatigued situations. For example, research has found that tyrosine supplementation may improve working memory and cognitive flexibility in those exposed to stressful situations, such as military training or sleep deprivation.
How? It is thought that tyrosine supplementation may help to replenish depleted neurotransmitter levels, helping to support optimal brain function during periods of high cognitive demand.
As well as its potential cognitive benefits, tyrosine supplementation has also been studied for its role in reducing stress and improving mood. Since tyrosine is involved in the synthesis of stress- and mood-regulating neurotransmitters, this makes a great deal of sense – several studies have investigated its effects on individuals exposed to acute stressors, and the results suggest that tyrosine supplementation may help to buffer against the negative effects of stress on mood and cognitive performance.
One recent study saw participants exposed to acute stressors, like public speaking. It found that tyrosine supplementation reduced the levels of stress-induced cognitive impairment. At the same time, participants reported feeling less stress, tension, and anxiety whilst taking the tyrosine.
Evidence also suggests that tyrosine supplementation might be helpful for users suffering from certain mental health conditions. Its role in potentially treating depression is particularly interesting – there are strong indications that it can help correct neurotransmitter imbalances in patients suffering with depression.
Do note, however, that while tyrosine supplementation may offer certain advantages, it is not a magic bullet, not a panacea. It won’t form the backbone of a good treatment plan by itself, but will likely need to be part of a broader approach. Its efficacy will likely vary depending on individual factors like genetics and overall health.
Always make sure that you talk with your healthcare provider before beginning any new supplementation regimen, especially if you’re suffering with any underlying physical or mental health concerns at all.
FAQs
Got some more questions about tyrosine? Here are the ones I first asked myself, and ones you must ensure you know the answers to:
What foods are high in tyrosine?
You can get plenty of tyrosine from dietary sources, though those following a vegan diet (like me) may struggle a little.
Tyrosine is found in high protein foods such as meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs, and legumes. Some plant-based sources of tyrosine include quinoa, nuts, and seeds.
Can tyrosine help with weight loss?
While tyrosine has been studied for its potential effects on cognitive function and mood, there is limited evidence to suggest that it can aid in weight loss.
If you’re looking to lose weight in a healthy, controlled way, stick to a moderate caloric deficit and engage in regular exercise – it’s the only real way to achieve lasting success.
Is it safe to supplement with tyrosine?
Tyrosine supplementation is generally considered safe when taken at recommended doses. However, excessive intake or supplementation without medical supervision can bring about some negative side effects.
Make sure not to dose too high – 500 mg daily in a supplement should be fine – and always consult your healthcare provider before beginning any new supplement regime.
Can tyrosine interact with medications?
Tyrosine may interact with certain medications, such as those used to treat thyroid disorders or depression. If you’re on any pre-existing medical regime, always consult your healthcare provider before taking any new supplement.
Can tyrosine be taken in combination with other supplements?
Tyrosine can be taken in combination with other supplements, but it is important to approach supplementation with caution and seek professional advice to determine the most appropriate approach for individual needs.
Can children and pregnant/breastfeeding women take tyrosine supplements?
Tyrosine supplementation is not recommended for children or pregnant/breastfeeding women.
Does tyrosine cause insomnia?
While tyrosine is not known to cause insomnia, it is important to be mindful of the timing of supplementation. Since tyrosine can have stimulatory effects, try not to take it too close to bedtime.
