It feels like two seemingly opposite trends have been building for a while now. On the one hand, you have a very modern urge for the digitization of everything – smart gadgets and everything on demand.

On the other hand, we have a developing interest in ancient traditions and customs to help us navigate through these ever-changing times – every business guru seems to quote Sun Tzu’s ‘The Art of War’, and everybody seems to be meditating.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before these worlds collided – the result is mind machines.

What Are Mind Machines?

Mind machines usually take the form of goggles, or some kind of headset, that is used in conjunction with headphones. The idea is that the device will play calming, rhythmic sounds at the same time as flashing lights – with the aim of altering the user’s brainwaves.

It sounds pretty intense, doesn’t it? Well the end-goal is anything but ‘intense’. Mind machines are designed to induce a state of deep relaxation – sort of like a shortcut to meditation. You put the headset on, and within seconds you are transformed into a calm, relaxed state.

They are sometimes known as brain machines, meditation machines, mind hacking machines or light and sound Machines.
